My main research themes are in energy, environmental and food issues. In particular, energy issues have been historically very important. As emerging economies develop, the consumption of fossil and nuclear fuels is increasing rapidly.

If consumption outstrips energy production and energy prices continue to rise, we will face economic depletion. If this is the case, there is no way to build a sustainable society.

Much of our food today is indirectly dependent on oil. A society with food and energy shortages could lead to another global war. I believe that the best way to achieve a truly sustainable energy society is to rely on the solar energy that is currently pouring down for primary energy.

My laboratory has conducted research and development of technologies to improve the performance of airplanes, energy efficiency of engines, fuel efficiency and aerodynamic noise reduction of high-speed bullet trains, a new high-efficiency high-speed transportation system “aero train”, and a lightweight metal material “flame-retardant magnesium alloy”, etc.
Through our research, we found that flame-retardant magnesium alloy has excellent performance as a fuel.

We do not burn magnesium. When magnesium is placed in a brine electrolyte and oxygen from the air is introduced through the cathode to accelerate the reaction, it generates electricity. Used magnesium can also be reduced as many times as needed by a 1200°C heat source.

Both fossil and nuclear fuels have their limitations. It is important to establish a safe, secure, and comfortable magnesium-based society that is sustainable both in principle and in technology.
